Mayor Daley took quite a bit of flak for taking over Meigs Field
in the middle of the night a few years back, but his aquisition
of Northerly Island and its' conversion into a beautiful greenspace
and music venue is one of the best additions to Chicago's public
park system in decades!
Now, Chicagoans and visitors alike can experience acres of native
prairie plants and grasses in an exceptionally tranquil and serene
setting, with the entire city as a backdrop. Park in the lot at
the interpretive center, and you can walk or ride your bike through
the museum campus and on to the lakefront trail, which stretches
from the far north side of the city to the far south side.
During the warmer months, free trolleys connect Northerly Island
to all the city's attractions, and you can also take a water taxi
from the aquarium directly to Navy Pier and on to Union Station.
12th Street beach is ideal for a less-crowded swim, and the stage
of the Charter One Pavilion is visible from the beach walk, meaning
you can take in a show while yor toes are in the sand! When it
comes to riding the city's lakefront, Northerly Island makes everything
possible!
